
Joe Holtschlag
CEO – Ascellus
Joe joined Ascellus as CEO in 2023, bringing over two decades of experience scaling operations and building innovative products in healthcare technology.
Throughout his career, Joe has focused on improving patient outcomes through technology, working across government, healthcare delivery, and high-growth companies.
Prior to Ascellus, Joe spent 15 years at athenahealth, where he held leadership roles across multiple functions including sales, operations, product development, and customer service. As Vice President of Operations Scale and Optimization, he led athenahealth’s largest growth initiative, designing, building, and launching three new technology-enabled services.
Earlier in his career, Joe worked at Masspro, at the time the Quality Improvement Organization for Massachusetts, where he led a team promoting the use of healthcare technology, a program that became a precursor to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) and Meaningful Use initiatives. He also spent time at Joslin Diabetes Center, where he played a key role in recovering a failed EHR implementation.
Joe received a BA in Economics from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Purdue University. Outside of his professional and family pursuits, Joe is a violinist with Symphony Pro Musica and an enthusiastic board game player.
