Illinois Kicks Off 2026 with Support That Shows Up for Substance Use Disorder

A new year brings a new way forward for recovery in Illinois. Wayspring and Aetna Better Health® of Illinois, a CVS Health® company, partnered to launch an innovative whole-person care model for Medicaid members living with substance use disorder (SUD). This collaboration is designed to break down barriers, meet people where they are, and make lasting recovery possible.
Starting January 2026, the program will serve 9,000 Aetna Better Health of Illinois Medicaid members statewide, offering care that integrates physical health, behavioral health, and social support alongside SUD treatment. Members can access services through telehealth or in person at a new Chicago-based clinic opening soon.
Why Whole-Person Care Matters
Recovery isn’t just about treatment — it’s about stability. This program goes beyond clinical care to address housing, food, transportation, employment, and other social needs that often stand in the way of progress. By caring for the whole person, Wayspring and Aetna Better Health of Illinois aim to reduce stigma, close gaps in care, and help members build a stronger foundation for the future.
Proactive Outreach That Makes a Difference
Wayspring’s engagement specialists, many of whom are in recovery themselves, are out in the community knocking on doors, visiting shelters, and making phone calls to ensure no one is overlooked. This hands-on approach is designed for those facing the steepest barriers, such as homelessness or food insecurity, and is changing the narrative for people who have been let down by the healthcare system before.
Partnering with Providers for Added Support
This collaboration isn’t just for members — it’s designed to help Illinois providers too. Wayspring works alongside substance use disorder and behavioral health providers to keep patients engaged between appointments, address social needs, and reduce administrative strain. By acting as an extension of care, Wayspring helps providers focus on delivering high-quality treatment while improving patient outcomes and long-term stability.
A New Chapter for Recovery in Illinois
With Aetna Better Health of Illinois’ reach and Wayspring’s whole-person model, Illinois now has a system of care that goes further — strengthening families, supporting providers, and creating a healthier future for communities across the state.
